Dole to Ranchot to a Weir tie

We left Dole early and headed to Ranchot.  Nice tied to the Peniche bollards as the dock was full.  Shady which was good in the hot afternoon.  Went to an art exhibit that was in the old Church.  Really interesting a fun touch.  The artist was there and was engaging. 

Then, we found the pizza place.  Wonderful staff and fun atmosphere.  Hadn't had french pizza yet, but it was an Italian place!  Good food and fun.  Stayed two nights. 

Departed Ranchot to Thoraise, where there is a solid wall to tie up next to that overlooks a large weir.  A weir is a place where the water drops down a level of up to six feet.  There is always a lock by a weir as that is how we get up to the next level. Two other boats from Ranchot joined us there.  Pleasant breeze and a nice wild feeling. Stayed there one night and headed to Besancon.

 Juniper!  She is a previous hire boat that has been privately owned for quite some time.  She is 38 feet long, has two staterooms and two heads, a decent sized kitchen with refrigerator and stove.  Nice seating are in the main cabin, where you can also steer from in bad weather (view from inside).  Fans and air conditioner for hot days. She also has an upper deck where most of the steering is done, and a table and chairs up there for eating with a great view! Well equipped to go on the canals, at a reasonably easy pace of 5 knots.  She has been over a lot of canals; we were on several in 2019.  This year it will be the Nivernais; beginning and ending in Auxerre.   So glad we were able to buy a 1/3 share to join our partners in 2019 and get our licenses.  This is a great way to travel and see the out of the way places in France.

Travelling back in time

When we planned our time, prior to the stoppage of Juniper, we had purchased tickets to go to the Grotto at Arcy sur Cure.  We were able to delay using our tickets, luckily, as we needed to get the car to go there. The Grotto at Arcy sur Cure are the third oldest caves in the world. These caves, according to the guide, are better able to handle visitors as they are large and have high ceilings to make it safe for both the people and to protect the cave.  We were with a group, and our guide spoke English as well as French.  The tour was impressive and very affirming of the creative processes of human beings, going back some 28,000 years ago.   The cave paintings are far back at the end of the cave, and were discovered as a result of wanting to clean up the caves from all the soot of torches over the years.  Using pressure washers, when red paint started washing out they realized that they were destroying paintings, circa 1970.  Since then, the have unco...
