Famous Dijon Bear   Square in Dijon Lunch at the Market with Dean Underground canal in Dole Dinner on Juniper Dole marina

Train trip to Dijon

We all took the train into Dijon for the day.  We love Dijon, and the Market there is a wonderful one.  We went to the Market and at our friend Dean's suggestion had lunch there.  You can order a glass of wine, and eat the items you purchase at the Market. It was delightful!!  Good foods and vegetables there.   The squares, the architecture, the plazas, the parks, the Owl on the Church wall that you rub for good luck, the dijon mustard tasting, the fountains, the famous bear statue, and lots of walking!  We had a lovely time with Tom and Erica on our last big adventure. The next day we took the train with Tom and Erica to Besancon.  They changed trains there to the TGV station and then onto Frankfurt.  We spent the day walking all around Besancon and checking out which moorage we would bring the boat to in a few days. We saw where the Olympic flame would be coming to in a few days.  Walking all around the perimeter of the town gave us a perspective from the land. Another rest day i

Up the Rhone au Rhine

With Tom and Erica we begin our trip on the Rhone au Rhine on June 17. We have not been on this canal previously, so everything is new and interesting.  The canal is operated by a hand held controller that you receive from the lock keeper at the first lock.  The locks are automated to open and close, fill with water, and then reopen.  We navigate eight locks to get to the city of Dole.   Turns out Dole ( a word for bridge toll in ancient France is a very interesting city.  We decide to keep it as our home base for the next week before Tom and Erica leave for home.  There are many bridges, including a 14th century Romanesque one, a part of which remains.  Louis Pasteur was born here to a family of tanners.   Juniper is moored next to a park, and we walked all over Dole looking at the old buildings, the Church, found the train station, spent time in another garden and explored the inner canals. Went to the Market and found a lovely bakery.  Dole had many surprises and enjoyable walking

2024 Adventure!!!!

Well, here we go again on the wonderful canal boat Juniper!   Flying into Frankfurt, Germany June 13th avoiding the Paris Olympics.  Accompanied by Tom Forbes and our friend, Erica Enyart!  Erica lives in Albuquerque, NM.  We stayed a night in Frankfurt and enjoyed walking through the Old Town area. They were gearing up for the EURO 2024 soccer matches.   Train trip on the German ICE train to Basel, Switzerland, the TGV to Dijon, then TER to Saint Jean de Losne, Juniper's home port.  Boat looked great due to our partners, Mary and Tom, having taken care of her.   Settled in and saw the town; went to the weekly Market, had a beer by the river Saone. Went to a great history museum of the area  Then our nephew Greg Simmons arrived for the weekend, from a conference in Lyon. Greg lives in Sweden and has been on Juniper.  Headed to Auxonne to do sea trials and spend the weekend.  Great weather for traveling and nice marina there.  Auxonne is a walled city built by the architect Vauban,
